The Curiosity Files: Zombie Fire Ants

I had the wonderful opportunity to review a product for TOS Homeschool Crew. At first I wasn't sure what I would be reviewing but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was an e-book about Zombie Fire Ants. Not that I was particularly excited at the thought of reading all about something called Zombie Fire Ants, but I knew that my son Nicholas would be thrilled with the idea.

The book is actually called, The Curiosity Files: Explorations with Professor Ana Lyze, Expert in Outlandish Oddities by The Old Schoolhouse.

I had never heard of The Curiosity Files series before reviewing this book. There are 9 different books in the series. Each book is a unit study focused around a central theme such as Zombie Fire Ants.

I didn't print the entire book but instead let Nicholas read it off my lap top. He loves any excuse to use my lap top!

He thought the information about Zombie Fire Ants was fascinating. The publisher recommends this book for ages 8-13. I loved that it was so well written that my 1st grader was able to fully understand it and complete most of the activities. I personally think the age range could be expanded to earlier and older ages.

The book starts with Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Zombie Fire Ants. Here we learned what they are, how they have impacted our society, and how everything has a purpose in God's plan. I really liked the section where Bible scriptures are used to explain why God would bring forth Fire Ants as well as how He provides and cares for us.

The rest of the book is devoted to a full unit study revolving around Fire Ants. We just started homeschooling this year in first grade and haven't done a unit study before. It was so much fun.

I had not printed the entire book because I expected to use my laptop to read it and then print off specific activities that we wanted to do. It seemed like an efficient way to do things. However, we got so excited about the activities that I went ahead and printed the whole thing. Nicholas said he was happy that I did so he can take the book to his room and read it anytime he wants to.

The activities are comprehensive, as a unit study should be. Topics like time zones, money, math such as measurement and perimeters, vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling, writing, crafts, and even snack recipes are all tied into the theme of Fire Ants. It's a really fun way to learn.

The Curiosity Files: Zombie Fire Ants sells for only $6.95 and comes with a 7-day, 100% money-back guarantee. There are also money-saving bundles of the complete series or you can even get a few specific books in the series for only $1.00!

You can get your own copy of The Curiosity Files: Zombie Fire Ants at The Old Schoolhouse Store. Here you can also find other books in The Curiosity Files series such as books on Puffer Fish, Quick Sand, and the Dung Beetle. This publisher also produces a wide variety of other publications and resources for homeschoolers, particularly The Old Schoolhouse Magazine which we love.

You can also find The Curiosity Files on Facebook where you can join in discussions with others who are using these unit studies and share ideas.

NOTE: A copy of The Curiosity Files: Explorations with Professor Ana Lyze, Expert in Outlandish Oddities was provided to me to review by TOS Homeschool Crew. I was not compensated for this review and my opinions stated here are completely my own.
