Happy Birthday, Rachel!

Baby Rachel is one year old today. I'm sad that her first year seems to have flown by but I'm excited for her when I look at how much she has grown and learned over this last year and all that waits ahead for her.

Granddad and Rachel share the same birthday and since Granddad is coming to visit us later this week we decided to let Rachel open a few presents tonight but save a few other presents and her birthday cake for when Granddad gets here. But for tonight, I did try to get her to wear her birthday hat...no luck!

Rachel didn't get into unwrapping presents but fortunately we have a 5 year old who can't keep his hands off of presents so they were all quickly unwrapped. She loves this chunky animal puzzle. Look at her tongue sticking out as she works on it - and that oh-so-serious look on her face in the second picture!

She worked on figuring out this ball tower toy. She's got that tongue going again.

Once Rachel was done playing with her toys, she wandered over to Nicholas' toys and struggled several times to put on one of his hats. So I don't have a picture of Rachel in her birthday hat but here she is in Nicholas' construction hat.

Then, just to rub it in, she also put on a Power Ranger mask. I tried the birthday hat again but she still cried. I don't understand!

At first you didn't lift your head;
You didn't know to smile.
The time before you knew my voice
Seemed such a long, long while.
I couldn't wait for you to roll,
And then to sit and clap.
And now you're off and crawling,
Not helpless in my lap.

Why didn't someone tell me
How fast a baby grows,
That every little baby stage
Soon comes, but sooner goes.
So I'll enjoy the fleeting time
Before you learn to walk.
And treasure every tiny noise
Before you learn to talk.

For soon you'll learn to walk,
Then run,
And talk and sing a song,
And never be my babe again.
The babe's forever gone.
Little baby, take your time,
For while you're tiny, you are mine.
