Gearing Up For The New School Year

Our Cub Scout Pack had Back To School pool party at Sun Valley Aquatic Park. What a fun way to wrap up the summer with friends!

Tomorrow is our first day back to homeschooling. We had a fun summer but we're looking forward to what the new school year will bring.

Nicholas will be in 2nd grade and a Wolf rank in the Pack.

He brings smiles to our home because he has fun in everything he does!

It will be an interesting challenge homeschooling both children this year, especially when they are at such different levels.

Rachel's personality has really started to blossom.

She loves experiencing new things but will quickly cling to us if she is unsure of anything. She has these floaties on her arms but will not let us put her in the water without holding on to her because she is too afraid. She clinches on to us with her mighty grip and even uses her toes to grab on to us.

I'm so proud of Stuart. He has volunteered to be the Assistant Cubmaster for our entire pack. I think he just wanted an excuse to get this cool Boy Scout hat!

It will definitely be an exciting year full of laughter, wonder, and discovery for all of us.

Rachel on the Ice

With all of the ice skating that Stuart and Nicholas are doing these days, it's only natural for Rachel to want to get in on the excitement too. She sometimes goes with us to Nicholas' skating lessons and if we can stay for public skating afterwards then she, of course, will want to go ice skating.

She gets very excited about putting on her ice skates. She evens thinks she can lace them up "all by myself"!

Fortunately, Daddy is always there to help her finish the job.

"I'm going to go ice skating!" She is so excited!

I'm impressed that she can balance so well just walking around on the thin blade. I would have expected her to be much more wobbly in them.

Time to get out on the ice!

Sometimes Daddy skates backwards while holding both of her hands.

Sometimes they try side-by-side one handed.

"Hey! Don't forget about me!"

Sometimes she falls but Daddy is always right there for her to catch her and comfort her.

Daddies are so special like that!

Dallas Restaurant Week 2011

Stuart and I enjoyed date night tonight and it wasn't our usual grab a burger and a movie kind of date night.

This was a real date night.

We ventured out of the burbs to some high class dining in Dallas. We don't typically do this except for very special occasions. However, this is Restaurant Week and there is really no better time to experience fine dining in Dallas-Fort Worth than during Restaurant Week.

130 exceptional restaurants to choose from, 3 courses for $35 and $7 goes to one of two great charities. How awesome is that?

We put the kids in Adventure Kids Playcare for the evening and hit the town for some juicy steak at Sullivan's Steakhouse

We've never dined at Sullivan's before but just their Restaurant Menu was quite impressive.

We splurged and opted for the add-on 4th course of an appetizer because the Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls with Sweet Chili Sauce just sounded too good to pass up. Doesn't it look beautiful?

But this appetizer wasn't just for show. It tasted delightful! It goes so well with the recommended Shooting Star Riesling too. I think the name is a little misleading because this didn't taste like any Philly Cheesesteak I've ever tried. Of course, the Sweet Chili Sauce really knocked it out of the park. I wish the waiter had left our bread so that we could have sopped some of the leftover sauce up with it!

I didn't bother to take a picture of the salad course because, well, it was just a salad.

I don't know what I was thinking! This was not just a salad. We even commented to Brian, our waiter, about it. This was the freshest, most balanced flavored salad ever. I just wanted to keep eating it.

And this was salad!

So now for the piece de resistance...the 10 oz. Boneless Ribeye with Chili Rub and Red Pepper Truffle Butter over Horseradish Mashed Potatoes!

They had me at "Truffle Butter"!

This steak was so juicy and tender and the flavors just made my mouth want to do the happy dance. I even savored a little sliver of fat because the flavor was just that good.

Of course, the Four Vines Red Zinfindel was the perfect pairing for this entree.

For dessert I really had a hard time deciding between the Chocolate Mousse and the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee. I decided on the Chocolate Mousse simply because I love all things chocolate. Stuart got the Creme Brulee.

We each tried both desserts and the clear winner was my Chocolate Mousse. It was wonderfully light but so rich with flavor.

The restaurant service was great and the decor was beautiful. We did have the best seat in the house though. Great view of the kitchen and centerpiece with a window in the giant wall of wine behind us.

There are lots of restaurants in town that have really good food but the meal we had at Sullvan's Steakhouse had unique and exciting flavors that took our dining experience to new level.

We have lived in the DFW Metroplex for 10 years now and this was our first time to participate in Restuarant Week.

We made a pact tonight that we will not miss another one.

Thank you to the Texas Beef Council for this great meal and for KRLD and Central Market for helping to make Restaurant Week happen.

Garden and Gun

Recently when I was waiting in the lobby of a salon waiting for my hair stylist to call me back, I started browsing the magazines lying around.

People, Newsweek, Parents, Garden & Gun.

Wait!

Did I read that correctly?

Garden & Gun?

That's a joke, right?

What do gardens and guns have to do with each other?

Well, I guess "Southern Living" just didn't cover everything a Southerner might want to read about.

But, of course, being geared towards the beautiful South, there must be some good recipes.

And what makes for a better recipe than bacon?!

Yep, bacon wrapped butter crackers. Fat free, right?

I found myself quite at home reading this magazine. It was a little pretentious, but then again, isn't that a Southern thing?

I really enjoyed the articles though.

Perhaps it was because they all reminded me of home...

I checked out Garden & Gun online and although I'm not signing up for a subscription, I joined their weekly newsletter so I can get my weekly fix of flowers and ammo.

Brotherly Love

There are so many precious moments where my two little children enjoy each other's company and play so well together.

They help each other look for a toy or build a tower. They work together to make delicious meals with their pretend plastic food.

They read books together and work on puzzles together.

They laugh together...and come up with sneaky plans together.

But my favorite moment is to catch them snuggled up on the couch together while waiting for breakfast.

But then...

There are those other moments.

Such as the scream I heard from the playroom earlier today from Rachel.

"NO! Mommy said don't SIT on me!"
