Our Sweet Little Angel

I just can't stop taking pictures of her! I know she's getting bigger every day and I just want to capture each moment and savor it!

Learning About Recycled Art at Art House

Today we went to Art House which is a local, family-owned business that teaches studio art classes for children and adults. They taught a special class today for our Early Childhood PTA group on Recycled Art, creating art work with materials from around the house. What a great concept! Keep trash out of the landfills, use up junk taking up space around the house, and use your imagination to create art at the same time! And best of all there is no need to spend money at a craft store on art supplies.

Kayli was our instructor. She set out some supplies for the children and gave them some suggestions to help them get started.

Next she talked to the adults about ideas for materials to use. She talked about paper mache to cover a variety of objects that normally might just get thrown out. She mentioned Pablo Picasso and his use of "found" materials such as sticks and leaves. She also had a great idea for using the thin foam pieces that you might get food packaged in at a grocery deli or meat counter. You can cut out squares of this material and use a pencil to softly draw a design into the foam then use it as a stamp to ink the design on paper. She also talked about corrugated cardboard and chipboard. She even said that you can wet the chipboard and mold it and it will hold the shape once it dries.

Our PTA is having a Recycled Art contest so this was a great opportunity to get ideas on what Nicholas and I can work on. It sounds like a fun challenge!

Rachel is 3 months old!

Rachel turned 3 months old today. I can't believe how quickly the time has flown. My dad recently reminded me how it seemed like just yesterday that I was still pregnant with her and it was three months until from her delivery date. At the time it seemed like it would be forever before I could finally be able to meet her and hold her in my arms. Now she's been her for three months already and the time is flying by too fast. I already miss that sweet little newborn stage.

Rachel will bat at a toy that is close to her and she will grab a toy if you brush it up against her hand. While she was lying on the bed, Nicholas gave her this little toy to play with and she gripped it right away. This was the first thing I've seen her really hold on to.

Rachel isn't very fond of tummy time. She will grumble a little and try to roll over to her back. She can rock her body a little and she lifts one leg as if she is trying to pull her body over but she can't quite do it yet. (Yes, that earlier roll over that she did soon after she was born was some kind of crazy luck. I still don't know how she rolled over when she was so young. I think the comforter on the bed must have been bunched up and gave her something to push off on because she hasn't been able to do it since.)

Rachel loves to look at faces and she smiles and laughs when people smile or talk to her. She tries to talk to you as well but just ends up making the cutest little babble. She likes to be read to and look at pictures in a book. She loves being outside.

Rachel still refuses to drink from a bottle and she won't take a pacifier. However, she has discovered that her hand is a nice thing to suck on when she wants to soothe herself to sleep. But she sleeps through the night beautifully and still naps a lot during the day. She gets so excited when she wakes up and someone comes to get her out of her crib.

Rachel loves her big brother. As I was changing her diaper this morning, Nicholas came in to tell her good morning. When she saw him she let out the cutest little squeal when she saw him.

Family Time Outdoors

This weekend we got a lot of quiet family time at home but we also spent some good time outdoors. We had a picnic at the duck pond and then went for a walk on one of the many trails in town. There were a lot of people out because the weather was so great.

As people on bicycles would ride up behind us on the trails, they would often call out, "passing on the left" to give us warning that they were about to be riding alongside of us. Nicholas asked us to explain why they did that. Once we told him, he decided to create a game in which we would run past each other while calling out "passing on the left" or "passing on the right". Of course, you should always want to be the leader so if you got passed up then you were supposed to try to run past that person so you could be the leader once again. Whew! That boy can run and run and never get tired! Not so for Mommy and Daddy :)

Nicholas and I also found a lot of great sticks on the walk. Some even had some cool curly-q leaves still attached to them. Nicholas insisted we bring home with us to add to his collection.

Nothing beats a quiet weekend spent outdoors with your family!

Party at WinKids

Nicholas was invited to a friend's birthday party at WinKids Sports and Learning Center. WinKids is a cool place that teaches various classes for children such as gymnastics, karate, swimming, dance, etc. So of course their parties are very active and engaging. Nicholas had a great time. He loved playing with the parachute...holding it, shaking it, walking in a circle with it, and crawling under it!

He also had a lot of fun playing on the gymnastic equipment...

However, his most favorite part was the giant three-person swing! It really is a pretty neat swing. It is anchored to the ceiling but the ceiling is really high so the swing gets a very high arch. The kids just love it!

It was a fun party. Even Mommy and Rachel had fun just observing from the sidelines.

Nicholas is talking about wanting to have his birthday party at WinKids too. Of course, he'll probably come up with 10 other places that he wants to have his party at before April actually gets here. Maybe we'll look into at least taking a class there this spring/summer. I think he would enjoy karate lessons there.
