Doing Nothing Together

We love to go do fun things but it's always nice to just have some down time on the weekend. It's important to have time to do nothing particularly special for those are some of the most special moments in life.

Daddy gets to snuggle up and read to his little girl.

Rachel likes the "touch and feel" books that have different textures in them. When I first introduced her to these, I would take her hand and help her feel the textures. Sometimes, like in this picture, she will use one hand to guide the other to feel the textures just like I used to do. Just a cute little quirky thing she does.

Of course, big brother has to get in on some reading time too.

Nicholas always loves making things with blocks. What a sweet creation for Mommy and Daddy!

Rachel climbed into the empty box that stores the wooden blocks so Daddy had some fun lifting her up in the box! She loved it!

Well, if Rachel is having fun in the box then Nicholas must have fun in the box too. It was a bit crowded but they both fit.

Rachel gave big brother a hug...

Ahh, I've finally got the box all to myself! Who knew the box could be so much fun!

It's so easy to get overscheduled with activities and festivals and errands on the weekend. We've got to remind ourselves sometimes that it's nice to just hang out at the house and enjoy spending time doing nothing together.

GIVEAWAY: snackTAXI bags!!!

snackTAXI sent me a wonderful collection of their reuseable snack and sandwich sacks to try out and they also gave me a set to giveaway!

snackTAXI sacks were created by a mom of 3 who got tired of adding a mountain of plastic zip top bags to the landfill from the 500 school lunches she made each year.

I usually try to use environmentally friendly products when packaging lunch for Nicholas. Instead of buying individual packages of crackers, I buy the larger size and then repackage them myself into individual servings for his lunch. No need to have all of that extra packaging in the land fills (plus it's cheaper to buy the larger sizes than buying all of those individual servings!). I used to use lots of little disposable zip-top bags. However, we were using several of them every single day and I hated to just throw all of that away. It didn't seem very environmentally conscious - not to mention the expense of always having to buy more. So at the beginning of this school year I went to Walmart and stocked up on a set of Rubbermaid plastic food storage containers. They are washable and don't add to the trash in the land fills. Although I've been using these for months now, I still haven't found a good way to make them work. They are never the perfect size and they are just a bit bulky for a lunch box. Take today's lunch for example...

I put a turkey sandwich in the the plastic food container, a thermos of milk, a tube of yogurt (yogurt is always more fun when eaten directly from a tube!), a wet hand towel, and a napkin. This barely fit in the lunch box and notice how it is bulging out on one side. There is no room for fruit or anything else. And Nicholas is an active growing boy who usually eats a lot for lunch so this just doesn't work well.

I re-packed his lunch using my new snackTAXI products. Wow! How awesome! The sandwich sack is very roomy and easy to put your hand in it to grab the sandwich. It fits perfectly in the lunch box. Since the sandwich sack is fabric, it only takes up as much space as is actually needed so there was more room for other goodies. As a matter of fact, I had enough room to add a whole apple, a small mandarin orange (hidden from view), and I was even able to use the smaller snackTAXI snack sack to hold some baby carrots, plus I put in the cute little matching snackTAXI napkin (because the boy ALWAYS need to clean up something). I just love these bags for packing his lunch. And Nicholas loves how colorful and exciting his lunch box looks now.

I love that these sacks are re-usable and washable. They can be hand washed and they air dry quickly or you can even throw them in the washing machine. The outside of the sacks are made from 100% cotton and the inside is lined with a waterproof material. Not only are there are so many cute fabric patterns to choose from, they add new patterns each month! And I love that I won't need to use those bulky hard plastic containers or waste those disposable plastic bags anymore!

snackTAXI even makes a durable, light weight nylon bag that you can use at your grocery store for produce or bulk items like nuts or granola so you can eliminate using those thin plastic bags on the roll (that I can never figure out which end to open!).

To enter the giveaway to win one snackTAXI sandwich sack and one snackTAXI snack sack, go to the snackTAXI website at www.snackTAXI.com or their Facebook page. After you've learned all about snackTAXI, come back here and leave a comment telling me one thing that you really like about snackTAXI and include your email address in your comment so I know how to get back in touch with you if you win. Each comment will be numbered in the order received and the winner will be chosen by random number generator at www.random.org.

Lego Mini Model Build

We just learned about a fun opportunity! Each month the Lego store has a FREE Mini Model Build event. How cool is that? Did I mention that it's FREE? You don't have to register, just show up. They have these on the first Tuesday of every month starting at 5:00. What makes them especially fun is that the model for each month has a theme. The theme for March is a shamrock for St. Patrick's Day!

Even though the event doesn't start until 5:00, we got there at 4:30 so shop a little before the event. However, there was already a line started for the mini model build.

The line started at the door of the Lego store and continued past the Sephora store and to the end of the Nestle Toll House Cookie counter. We decided we had better go ahead and get in line. Well, we were standing right by this Nestle display case for 30 minutes...of course, we had to get a cookie (or three)!

At 5:00 the line started moving. The Lego employees did a great job of managing the number of people in the store. They had a few tables set up in the middle of the store for the mini model build and plenty of room in the rest of the store for the regular shoppers. They kept track of how many kids were at each table and they would only call more people from the line when they had room for them. It was really well managed. Thank goodness because I had Rachel in her stroller and I really wasn't up for a mob session or having to worry about pushing someone over with the stroller as I tried to keep up with my fast little 5 year old.

At the table, there were several sets of the instructions taped around the table so everyone could easily see them. Each child had a little pile of the Lego pieces they would need for the build. It was easy to just jump right in and get to building!

There was an employee at each table available to help with the build. But it was an easy project with only 23 pieces so Nicholas didn't need any help.

He is very excited about his little shamrock that he built himself.

Of course, once you are at the Lego store, you must shop in the Lego store. We were there another 30 minutes after the build just playing and making up a birthday wish list.

I noticed as we were leaving at about 5:45 that there was only one person still in line. I think next time we'll just wait and come later so we can go right in. That's just easier for me than waiting in line when I've got an antsy one year old who wants to get out of the stroller after 20 minutes. I saw a sample of the build for next month. It's a cute little yellow chick just in time for Easter!

Is There A Baby Translator In The House?

I'm in need of a baby translator. Rachel has so much to say these days but unfortunately I can't begin to figure out most of the words she is saying. It's entertaining to listen to her though...

I did capture her saying "bath time". She starts saying this as soon as she sees me get out her towel or when I turn on the faucet in the tub.

What a Beautiful Weekend!

The weather this weekend was beautiful. It just made us want to get outside and play! And there's always a fun playground nearby!

Rachel climbed to the top of this tall slide with Daddy close behind, just in case. She got to the top and then realized how high up she was and wouldn't go down the slide.

Of course, the boy is fearless...monkey bars, climbing walls, and fire poles are no match for him.

And jumping off the equipment is always fun too!

Rachel attempted to copy big brother and climb the climbing wall. She held onto a piece of the wall but that's as far as she got.

Being so low to the ground, Rachel finds all kinds of little tiny things that we would never see. Fortunately she likes to give these to us and not put them in her mouth!

While Nicholas was off playing with some other kids on the playground, Rachel and I spent some time collecting acorns.

Of course, leave it to one of my children to find the one little muddy spot and then laugh as she bounces up and down to hear the mud go "Squish" under her feet!

We hope you got outside and enjoyed some Mother Nature this weekend too.
