Fancy Dinner At Home

We used to go out to steak restaurants every now and then for a really nice meal. Now that we have two loud, squirmy kids, it's a little more of a hassle to go out to eat and we are more likely to find ourselves at a sandwich shop than a nice restaurant.

But I still crave steak and that fancy restaurant atmosphere but I've found that I can recreate it at home (for a lot less money!).

I picked up a couple of Pinor Noir wines at Kroger. We decided to try the Barefoot wine.

I also got a few packages of Marie Callendar's Steak in Mushroom Sauce. It comes with Roasted Red Potatoes and a Classic Green Bean Casserole.

I heated up the meal in about 6 minutes. The Classic Green Bean Casserole even comes with friend onions on top but I did add a few more, just because we really love fried onions. I added a fresh salad and some warm dinner rolls.

This was a quick and easy steak dinner that was delicious and filling. The main meal without salad, bread, and wine was only 350 calories and the portion sizes were perfect. We didn't feel like we had to be rolled out of our seats like we sometimes do when we eat the larger portions served at restaurants.

My family really enjoyed the Marie Callender's Steak in Mushroom Sauce meal and we'll definitely have it again in the near future.

I'm getting a little spoiled with these quick and yummy Marie Callender's meals, aren't I?

Note: Marie Callender's and The Motherhood provided me with a free meal for review purposes and compensated me for my time involved in the review. However, the comments and opinions are all my own. I would not promote a product that I didn't sincerely want to recommend to others.

Living Art with Melted Crayons

It's been really, really hot here. I'm talking about 110 degree highs every day!

It's hot enough to melt crayons in my van. Unfortunately, I know this from personal experience. We decided to see how well they would melt outside and experiment with an art project while we were at it.

Each child placed some wax paper on a white poster board. Then they decorated their wax paper with bits of broken crayons that are too small to draw with anymore.

Nicholas made an outline of a house with some grass and the sun shining up above.

Rachel took a more modern art approach with her design.

Once the crayons were placed and a little glitter was added (everything is better with glitter, right?) then the children covered their work with another piece of wax paper. They had to add a few sticks around the edges to keep the top sheet of wax paper from blowing away.

Then we let the sun do it's work.

Some of the crayons melted rather quickly. Others took a little longer.

It was fun to watch them all ooze and change the look of the art work being created right before our eyes. It was like "living art".

Being two years old, Rachel is compelled to touch everything. So of course she had to touch her art work as she saw it moving around on the page. I love letting them be free to test what will happen when they do something new instead of holding them back so they don't "mess" up their art work. Art is about the process. It is about the act of creating.

By experimenting, Rachel came up with a whole new twist to our living art project. Instead of just letting the sun have all the melting fun, we decided to use sticks to draw and design with the melted crayons through the wax paper.

I think it turned out beautiful and the blends of colors are much more vibrant than they would have been if Rachel had just let them melt where they had originally been placed.

Nicholas liked blending his with a stick but it no longer looked like a house once he was done. I love this picture where he made a discovery that his house now looked like a volcano with lava spewing down the sides.

Another example of the beauty of living art that changes it design and focus and outcome as the process unfolds.

We let the pieces cool inside and then hung them on the wall for Daddy to see when he gets home. Some of the yellow sun had not melted enough to make a good seal with both layers of wax paper so shortly after we hung it on the wall, the front layer of wax paper detached from the sun crayons and flopped forward.

Nicholas never once got sad. He was excited as he looked at it and said, "Wow! The sun has gone down. I guess its a sunset!"

Save Money on Groceries Without Stacks of Coupons

Some people score some really great deals with coupons. They collect every Sunday coupon section they can get their hands on. They scour the web and ad flyers to map out which stores have the best deals and how they can match up their coupons with the sales to get as much food as they can without paying much.

These are Extreme Couponers.

Some of them can go into a grocery store, buy 3 shopping carts full of items and pay less than $20. I don't know how they do it but I bow down to them. I would love to be so organized and have the free time to do all of the prep work to manage that haul.

However, I have a two year old.

I am no Extreme Couponer.

I rarely have coupons because I don't get the newspaper since I would never have time to read it.

I do have a few coupons. Sometimes they come in the mail or sometimes I pull one from a magazine. I've also found several sites where I can print them off the web. But too often, they remain in the kitchen cabinet until they expire. I just don't have time to look through them. I'm lucky if I can even get my grocery list written down on paper without my little one needing a snack or having a potty training issue.

We often fly out the door and then once I'm staring at the product on the shelf I think, "Oh, I have a coupon for that at home!" But I buy it anyway because I know I still won't have the coupon the next time I come back.

My only saving grace is that my local Kroger has some really good sales so it doesn't hurt quite as much if I don't have a coupon with me.

The best sales are Kroger Cart Buster sales! And it's happening now at Kroger through August 17.

Here's a list of the participating products in the Cart Buster sale.

Some of my favorite deals are:

~ 16 oz jar of peanut butter for $1.49 (save $.69)
~ 24 count Aquafina bottled water for $3.99 (save $5.00)
~ Honey Nut Cheerios for $3.29 (save $2.10)
~ Sliced or shredded cheese for $1.88 (save $.61)

We use these things all the time so it's nice to be able to stock up on them at such great prices - and I don't even need a coupon!

My personal favorite item on the Cart Buster sale is my dear Starbucks Frappucinos!

Sugar AND Caffeine in one innocent looking bottle!

So not only are there great deals right now at Kroger but did you know that they have digital coupons? I go online at night once my sweet little distractions are in bed and I can add coupons directly to my Kroger shopping card and the coupons are automatically deducted from my bill at checkout.

Yep, I totally forget about those coupons and it's ok! I still get the discount!

So I shopped the Cart Buster sale last night and did pretty well for someone without a single coupon in hand.

Here's my cart at checkout. Lots of good stuff.

The bill would have been $92.71 but with the Cart Buster savings and my online coupons, it was only $64.46. That's a 30% discount.

No, the Extreme Couponers do not need to fear me because I will not be cleaning off the shelves of the last box of Hamburger Helper.

But I do like a deal, especially when it is this easy.

Make sure to follow the Cartbuster "Deal of the Day" through August 16th at www.cartbuster.com. You can download one special deal each day to your shopper's card. Last night I got an coupon for $1.50 off Klondike ice cream! Yum!

Urgent Care Saves The Day - Two Days In A Row!!

Just the other day I was thinking back over some of the medical expenses we've had this year and thought, "Well, with all of that behind us, surely we are done with the drama for this year."

How wrong could I be?

Sunday afternoon we were just browsing around a sporting goods store looking at a bike for Rachel, roller blades for Stuart and Nicholas, and a helmet for me. Nicholas was looking at a big piece of exercise equipment next to us. He was curious about how it worked. So of course, he pulled one of the handle bars down. Rachel screamed and then we all realized that her little thumb was crushed as the bar had rotated down. Nicholas pulled it back as soon as he realized what had happened. Rachel's thumb was really bad looking. Some of the skin was peeled back and it was instantly swollen. I was so worried that it was broken, especially since she couldn't move it.

Since it was Sunday our pediatrician's office was closed but we were just minutes from Acute Kids Urgent Care.

Rachel was in pain and very scared so she was crying just about the whole time we were there. The doctor and nurse was very patient with her and did their best to try to calm her down. However, Rachel did not want to get an x-ray so we did have to hold her hand down to get it which made her really, really mad.

Fortunately, there were no broken bones. The skin is ripped and the tissue underneath is macerated enough from the crush that they can't do a reliable job with stitches. So we have to keep it extra clean to prevent infection while the skin grows back and the tissue underneath heals.

In order to keep the thumb immobilized to help the tissue heal, the doctor recommended putting a little splint on her hand. I'm sure it is a little uncomfortable for Rachel but she does like the cool pink ace bandage that they wrapped around it. The doctor even gave her a pink popsicle once they were all done.

I am really grateful for Acute Kids Urgent Care. We were seen right away and everyone was great with Rachel. They took the x-rays and were quick to have a radiologist review them and get an answer to us in right away. I have no idea how much this will cost us because they will send the bill later. We haven't met our deductible yet so it will be costly no matter what but I'm sure it has to be cheaper than an ER visit. Right?

As far as follow up care, they recommended that we have her checked by her pediatrician the next day in case there was more swelling or any other concerns that might be more apparent by then.

At home, Rachel has been fine. We've given her Motrin to help with pain and she hasn't complained a bit about it hurting. And she is amazing talented at still getting into everything one handed!

Monday morning we followed up with our pediatrician. He said that he didn't see any new concerns but gave us a prescription for a strong antibiotic ointment and then he redressed the wound. I got a picture of her little thumb before it got covered up again. It is still swollen and bruised and very painful looking. There is a little flap of skin that is covering a lot of the wound. The doctor told us that it might not really heal and instead might just shrivel up. So it is extra important to keep this area clean because we might have to wait for new skin to grow in. Poor baby!

After all of the drama yesterday, I was glad to be done with the follow up appointment this morning. However, little did I know that Rachel still had a little more drama to come.

Last night the four of us were sitting at the kitchen table eating dinner. Rachel mubbled something to me in her quiet voice and I thought for sure I had misunderstood her. I asked her to repeat what she had said. She said, "Mommy, can you get this french fry out of my nose?"

What?!

We had her tilt her head back and sure enough we could see a piece of french fry lodged in her nose.

When did she do that? We were all sitting her together talking over dinner and somehow the three of us missed seeing the 2 year old put a french fry up her nose?

And why did she do that? Oh yeah, she's two!

The fry was too far up for us to just pull it out. We thought a bulb suction might help to suck it out. Unfortunately that was not a good idea because as we inserted it in her nose it actually ended up pushing the fry farther up her nose to where we could almost no longer see it. Now there was no way that we were going to pull it out.

Maybe we can just squirt some saline up her nose to help push it out the other side and into her throat. She could swallow it or spit it out and all will be well. But what if it does come out back there and she starts choking on it? Or what if it doesn't come out and ends up causing an infection?

I called the pediatrician's office to get their recommendation. They said that we should not squirt saline up her nose because the fry could cause her to aspirate. They do not have the small extraction tools needed to pull the fry out so they suggested we take her to an urgent care clinic that night. She asked if we knew where to find an urgent care clinic?

Um, unfortunately yes. Yes we do.

I explained to Rachel that we had to go to the doctor's office to get the french fry removed from her nose. She seemed ok with that. But as soon as we parked in front of Acute Kids Urgent Care, Rachel got squirmy and whiney.

"That's not the doctor's office we are going to, right? We're just going over there to that other place?" as she pointed to one of the other shops next to the urgent care.

She was not happy about returning here and I wasn't either, especially since I still have no idea what this place costs! But you got to do what you got to do.

Once we were settled in the examination room, Rachel calmed down. She told me all about the mural on the wall behind her.

The doctor came in and tried to remove the fry with some tweezers. Yes, tweezers! I could have done that! Well, except for the fact that we needed multiple people there to hold her head still, keep her arms secured, and her body still.

The tweezers pulled out little tiny mushy pieces of fry but the fry was too mushy to be able to pull much of it out.

Plan B - We again held her down while a nurse shot saline up one side of the nose which ended up pushing the piece of fry out the other side of the nose.

Weren't we told to NOT shoot saline up her nose?

Oh well, the fry is out and Rachel got another popsicle for being so brave.

I hope we are done with medical traumas for a while!

Creative Costumes

I love to encourage my children to have dramatic play where they can pretend to be a super hero or a princess. We have lots of costumes. I usually buy them at consignment stores when they put out their costumes for Halloween. There is a pretty good selection and the prices are drastically cheaper than if I bought them new so I can pick up a couple of costumes for each child.

That being said, I also encourage my children to use their imagination. So what if we have a complete wizard costume? Wouldn't those pieces look even better if they were combined with other cool costumes...or sports equipment?

Here is Nicholas' latest costume creation...
* swimsuit
* soccer shin guards
* water shoes
* Bibleman cape
* wizard hat
* archery elbow guards
* bow and arrow set
* gloves from toy tool bench

I just love this kid's creativity!
