Head to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science for the family-fun Discovery Days, special activities and crafts, extended hours, 3D films and more! And don’t miss the magically mesmerizing Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence traveling exhibition before it “glows” away for good Feb. 21.
On Saturday, create your own circuits, program robots, build your own inventions, see how a 3D printer works and delight in tech-riffic fun for all ages at Discovery Days: Gadgets and Gizmos. Throughout the weekend, enjoy live “science on the spot” demos, bookworm readings, trivia and drop-in activities such as “boo bubbles” and robotics at select times on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. (See below or check the website for a detailed schedule.) All activities are free to Perot Museum members and included with general admission for non-members.
Got a little one 5 and under? Head downstairs to the Moody Family Children’s Museum for robot-themed Valentine’s Day crafts on Saturday and Sunday, plus special science crafts on Monday.
Take a break in The Hoglund Foundation Theater, a National Geographic Experience for a stunning 3D film experience including Tiny Giants 3D, Journey to Space 3D and Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure 3D.
The Perot Museum will stay open until 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Presidents’ Day. Special member-only hours will be offered Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning.

Studying Shadows on Groundhog Day
Rachel played with shadows in honor of Groundhog Day! We went outside to draw her shadow with chalk on the driveway. But I caught this view of her with the sun shining in her hair and just had to catch the picture. She's growing up so fast!
Then I pushed my luck and tried to get some close up pictures of her. But she got silly and crazy-eyed!
We started at 10:00 this morning. She stood on the driveway and I traced the outline of her shadow.
And she colored it in with more chalk.
We repeated the chalk shadows at 1:00 and 4:00. She was excited to see how much her shadow changed based on where the sun was in the sky.
The mid-day shadow is the most realistic whereas the late afternoon shadow is really stretched out!
Groundhog Day Cupcakes (Tutorial)
Happy Groundhog Day 2016. This morning Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow when he came out of his burrow so that means that we should all enjoy an early Spring this year. I showed the kids some videos from Phil's handlers who explained to them a little about the history of Groundhog Day and how they know if Phil saw his shadow.
Then Rachel made Groundhog Day cupcakes for us!! She used a basic cake mix in a box and enjoyed using the stick blender.
She filled the muffin tin with cupcake liners then scooped some batter into each cupcake spot.
She may have licked the spoon when she was done but I just can't be sure...
The cupcakes were baked and allowed to cool on a rack. Yum!
She covered them with white frosting, like a winter's snow. Then she pushed an Almond Joy into the center of the cupcake.
Here are some of her supplies that she used to make the groundhog face....mini chocolate chips, chocolate icing with a fine tip, some red gummy bears, and some candy eyeballs.
She used the chocolate icing as glue. She glued on two mini chocolate chips for ears and two for puffy cheeks.
She added two eyes and cut off a piece of red gummy bear for a tongue. Isn't he cute?
